Türkiye Introduces “Turkestan” Terminology in Educational Curriculum
The Turkish Ministry of Education has announced significant changes to its school curriculum, replacing the term "Central Asia" with "Turkestan."
This decision aims to instill a sense of national pride, patriotism, and Turkic identity among future generations. The initiative emphasizes the historical significance of the Turkestan region, which historically encompassed vast territories populated by Turkic peoples before Russian colonization.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan highlighted the importance of strengthening the Turkic world, asserting that this move will give new momentum to the development of unity among Turkic countries. He emphasized Turkey’s commitment to fostering partnerships with Turkic nations and enhancing their shared cultural and historical heritage.
The Ministry of Education has also revised textbooks for various educational levels, introducing the concept of “Turkestan,” which historians argue more accurately reflects the region’s historical and cultural reality. The term “Turkestan” is believed to have been in use long before Russian intervention and remained relevant until the mid-19th century.
Historians note that the reintroduction of this term is a crucial step for Turkey in promoting historical awareness among its youth.
