Türkiye earthquake update: The death toll tops 45,000

The death toll in Türkiye from last month’s devastating earthquake has risen to 45,089, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said on Wednesday. 

According to the information, the natural disaster caused the death of 45 thousand 89 people. 1 million 971 thousand 589 people were evacuated from the earthquake area.

After the powerful earthquake that occurred on February 6, 11 thousand 20 aftershocks have been recorded to date, including more than 10 thousand with a magnitude of up to 6.6. The two earthquakes were also felt in Lebanon, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Iran, Egypt and Cyprus.

Earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 occurred on February 6 with an interval of nine hours in the province of Kahramanmaras in southeastern Türkiye. The tremors, followed by hundreds of aftershocks, were felt in ten provinces of the republic and in neighboring countries, of which Syria suffered the most. On Monday, two new tremors with magnitudes of 6.4 and 5.8 occurred in Hatay province.
