The voting process began at 8 a.m. local time in most cities, with the exception of the eastern provinces, where it started an hour earlier. The decision to adjust the voting time in 32 eastern provinces was made by the Supreme Electoral Council of the country, taking into consideration the month of Ramadan. Consequently, elections in these provinces commenced at 7:00 am local time and will conclude at 4:00 pm, while in the other 49 provinces, voting hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Approximately 61.5 million voters are expected to participate in the elections, with a significant focus on key cities like Ankara and Istanbul. These cities hold paramount importance in the political landscape of Türkiye, with Istanbul often symbolizing political control over the entire country.
As per tradition, political campaigning is prohibited on election day in Türkiye. Nevertheless, the population remains highly politicized, ensuring a potentially high turnout driven by citizens’ commitment to fulfilling their civic duty.
Initial election results are anticipated to be disclosed in the evening. In accordance with the regulations set by the Supreme Electoral Council, in case of annulled voting results, a re-election will be conducted locally on June 2 of this year.
