Turkic Countries Shine at Paris 2024 Olympics
At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, athletes from Turkic countries showcased impressive performances, securing numerous medals across various sports.
Kazakhstan earned a total of 7 medals, including 1 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze. The gold medal was claimed by judoka Yeldos Smetov in the 60 kg category. Silver medals were won by gymnast Nariman Kurbanov, Greco-Roman wrestler Demeu Zhadrayev (77 kg), and boxer Nurbek Oralbay (80 kg). Bronze medals were achieved by Nazym Kyzaibay (boxing, up to 50 kg), shooters Alexandra Le and Islam Satpayev in mixed team events, and judoka Gusman Kyrgyzbayev (up to 66 kg).
Uzbekistan led the Central Asian countries with 13 medals, including 8 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze. Uzbek athletes excelled particularly in boxing and wrestling.
Kyrgyzstan secured 6 medals, comprising 2 silver and 4 bronze. Medalists included Zholaman Sharshenbekov, Akzhol Makhmudov, Uzur Yuzipbekov, and Aisuluu Tynybekova, who won bronze. Silver medals were earned by Meerim Zhumanazarova (freestyle wrestling) and Munarbek Seyitbek (boxing).
Azerbaijan achieved 7 medals at the Games: 2 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze, with notable successes in wrestling and boxing.
Türkiye concluded the Olympics with 8 medals, including 3 silver and 5 bronze. Turkey’s first Olympic medals in team shooting were silver, awarded to Şevval Ilayda Tarkhan and Yusuf Dikeç in the 10m air pistol mixed competition. Hatice Akbash also won a silver medal in women’s boxing (up to 54 kg) by defeating her Chinese opponent in the final.
Unfortunately, Turkmenistan did not secure any medals in these Games.
Hungary, with Turkic roots in the Balkans, achieved a total of 19 medals: 6 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze, showing exceptional performance in canoeing, swimming, and fencing.
