Turkey Considers Longer Working Hours for Smoking Civil Servants
A petition submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye has sparked nationwide debate. The proposal suggests that government employees who smoke should have their working hours extended to make up for time lost during smoking and tea breaks.

Supporters argue that smokers frequently leave their desks, reducing productivity, and should compensate by working additional hours. The initiative is framed as a measure to ensure fairness for non-smoking colleagues who spend their full hours at their posts.
Although still under review, the petition has ignited heated discussions regarding both workplace equity and individual freedoms.
Some experts believe that rather than imposing restrictions, introducing incentives to help employees quit smoking would be a more effective approach.
