According to 24kz, the delegation explored historical and cultural landmarks around Turkestan for three days and got acquainted with local handicrafts. At the Palace of Students, they observed handmade works by young artisans.
Craftsmen from India, Türkiye, and East Asian countries will now share their impressions with colleagues in other member states of the organization and present Turkestan’s potential. If the commission gives a positive verdict, Turkestan could officially receive the status of an international handicraft city in April 2024.
Turkestan applied for membership in the World Craft Council last year. Previously, three cities in Uzbekistan, one in Kyrgyzstan, and the Kazakhstani city of Taraz had joined the organization from Central Asia.
Experts highlight that Turkestan’s ceramic crafts stand out for their intricate patterns, aesthetics, and high quality. If the city is included in the list, it could significantly boost tourism development in the region.
Sohan Kumar Jha, Expert of the World Craft Council for the Asia-Pacific Region:
— There are specific criteria and requirements for inclusion in this list. First, the city must have a rich historical background. Second, its historical and cultural sites should be supported by a strong infrastructure. Most importantly, local authorities must actively support the initiative. Additionally, the city must have traditional crafts that are recognized nationally and internationally. Turkestan has a well-developed ceramic industry, and we will recommend its inclusion in the list.
Mukhtar Akzhigituly, Head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Tourism of Turkestan:
— This will create a great opportunity for Turkestan’s handicraft industry to expand on the international stage. The special status will also allow artisans to receive subsidies for renting workshops, purchasing equipment, and acquiring raw materials. All these efforts aim to further develop the city’s handicraft sector.
