“Today is a day of freedom for America,” Trump declared while introducing the new measures. He described the policy as a “bilateral tariff for all” and criticized other nations for imposing “excessively high” import taxes on U.S. goods.
Trump claimed that April 2, 2025, would be remembered as the day of American industrial revival. Besides the base tariff, his administration plans to introduce additional duties for countries with what it calls an “unfair” trade balance.
The highest tariffs will target Cambodia (49%), Vietnam (46%), and China (34%), with Thailand, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, and the EU also included.
Trump asserted that the policy would level the playing field and mark the beginning of a “new golden age for America.” He also emphasized the need to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
