“Totem of the Turkic World” Conference Held on Sacred Otpan Mountain

A major international academic conference titled “Totem of the Turkic World” was held on Otpan Mountain in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region.

The event was part of the cultural initiatives marking the city of Aktau’s designation as the 2025 Cultural Capital of the Turkic World.

Delegations from Kazakhstan, Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan took part in the gathering. Scholars, historians, and cultural experts convened at the “Karashanyrak” complex to exchange views on how best to promote the rich history, languages, and literary heritage of Turkic peoples to the global audience. The forum aimed to strengthen cultural ties and celebrate shared values across Turkic nations.

As part of the yearlong celebrations, over 30 major cultural events are planned across the region. Among the most significant are the annual “Unity Fire” lighting on Otpan Mountain and the spring festival “Amal,” which attracts visitors from neighboring countries and highlights traditional Kazakh customs and national sports.
