Today, April 18 is the International Day of Monuments and Historical Sites. On this occasion, the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan presented the top five historical places and monuments in the country, Turanews.kz reports.
1. Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi
The mausoleum of Khoja Ahmet Yasawi is one of the most famous historical places in the country and an outstanding work of medieval architecture in the territory of Central Asia.
The mausoleum had built in the 14th century under the leadership of Amir Timur and it is considered sacred for the people of Kazakhstan and the Turkic world. The remains of 24 khans and sultans, 57 batyrs and 18 biys are buried near this monument.
The height of the mausoleum which was included in the “UNESCO World Heritage List” is 39 meters. The building consists of 35 rooms connected to each other through different corridors. In the central room there is an ancient relic – Taikazan.
2. Tanbaly petroglyph site
The ancient stones of Tanbaly are one of the most important objects of the historical heritage of the country. This is the first monument of rock art in Central Asia, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The petroglyphs in the archaeological complex of Tambaly, have a history of four thousand years and the total number of pictures is about 5000.
The pictures on the rocks show the perception of the surrounding world by the early human and their worldview at the time. Petroglyphs are based on a certain system and philosophical, cognitive consistency.
3. Akyrtas Palace Archaeological Complex
The Akyrtas palace complex is full of secrets which was built in the 8th-12th centuries. Each of the stone blocks laid on the walls weighs about one ton. Some carved stones weigh more than 10 tons.
Scientists believe that the Akhirtas complex which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List is the “City of Kasribas” located on the Great Silk Road that is found in Arabic sources.
Covering an area of 2.5 hectares, this facility had about 70 rooms, 15 colonnaded galleries, entrance gates and a half-hectare open space in the middle.
4. Jarkent Mosque
The masterpiece of Jetysu: the great work of architecture is the The Jarkent Mosque – architecture and art museum. Nails were not used in the construction of the columns and other wooden parts. The Jarkent Mosque was built between 1887 and 1892.

5. Aisha Bibi Mausoleum
The mausoleum of Aisha Bibi is an outstanding architectural monument of the 11th-12th centuries.
It has no equal among other memorial-traditional monuments in terms of the beauty and variety of carved patterns.
The mausoleum attracts tourists not only with its unique architecture, but also with the endless love story between Bibi Aisha and hero Karakhan.
There are more than 25,000 monuments of historical and cultural heritage in Kazakhstan. Among them, 10 monuments are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, 12,463 monuments have the status of historical and cultural monuments of national and local significance.
“In the future, the Ministry of Culture and Sports plans to add 6 more historical monuments to the UNESCO World Heritage List,” the press release said of the Ministry.
