The European Union faces a major demographic decline
the EU's population will decrease by 6% between 1 January 2022 and 1 January 2100 which is equivalent to 27.3 million fewer people
The European Union is on the cusp of major demographic change as new projections point to a significant decline in population by the end of the century, Turanews.kz reports.
Eurostat estimates that by 2100 the population could fall by 6%, or 27.3 million people.
After two years of decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU population began to recover in 2022 and is estimated to have reached 451 million at the beginning of this year. This growth is largely due to the massive influx of Ukrainian refugees that followed the Russian invasion.
The bloc’s population will continue to grow, reaching 453 million in 2026 before falling to 420 million by 2100, according to the latest report from the EU statistics office.
The results are based on assumptions of partial convergence of EU countries’ fertility, mortality and migration patterns.
