The death toll from the landslide has reached 21 in Georgia
The death toll from a landslide in the resort of Shovi in western Georgia has reached 21 people, Turanews.kz reports.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the landslide occurred on August 3 and damaged bridges, roads, tourist cottages, and the Sunset Shovi Hotel. Search and rescue operations have been ongoing for the past six days, and two more bodies were found on Wednesday.
Temur Mgebrishvili, head of the Emergency Management Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, said that one body was found directly at the epicenter of the disaster and the other was found in the riverbed.
Mgebrishvili said that firefighters, police, drones, special equipment, and a border police helicopter are involved in the search and rescue operations. He added that the operations will continue until all of the missing people have been found.
The landslide in Shovi is the latest in a series of natural disasters to hit Georgia in recent months. In July, heavy rains caused flooding and landslides in the country’s east, killing at least 19 people.
The government of Georgia has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas and is providing financial assistance to the victims.
