Telegram to Open Office in Kazakhstan
Telegram is set to appoint a representative in Kazakhstan, with plans to establish an office in the country, marking a significant step in regulating online content and enhancing digital security.
Zhaslan Madiyev, the Minister of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan, recently held discussions with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and representatives from major American companies, including Meta and Apple. These meetings focused on key issues such as data security, combating fake accounts, and protecting users—crucial measures for ensuring the safety of Kazakhstani citizens in the digital space, according to the ministry’s press service.
“We are also working closely with Telegram to swiftly remove illegal content and block harmful channels. In line with our legislation, internet platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, and TikTok are now required to have a representative based in Kazakhstan. We have already reached an agreement with Telegram on appointing their representative and opening an office—an important step towards improving content control,” Madiyev stated.
Additionally, the ministry is collaborating with Meta to tackle fraudulent schemes. Online fraud is a global challenge that demands collective efforts, with Meta representatives highlighting that the issues faced by Kazakhstan are common across many nations. In the last quarter alone, Meta utilized AI technologies to block 1.2 billion fake accounts worldwide.
Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Digital Development remains committed to partnering with international organizations to build a secure infrastructure that protects its citizens on digital platforms. User protection is a top priority, and the government will continue to strengthen cooperation to achieve this goal.
