Taliban Enforces New Ban on Women Speaking to Each Other in Afghanistan
Pressure on women’s rights in Afghanistan has intensified.

Taliban introduced a set of laws aimed at “promoting virtue and eliminating vice,” under which a woman’s voice in public is labeled a “vice.”
The United Nations has condemned these new so-called “vice and virtue restrictions,” expressing serious concern over their impact on Afghan women.
Since the Taliban’s rise to power in August 2021, Afghan women have faced severe restrictions: they are prohibited from pursuing education, traveling without a male guardian, and speaking in public, especially with men. Additionally, women are barred from visiting parks, swimming, and participating in any sports. Beauty salons have been closed, women’s shelters have been shut down, and the law aimed at combating violence against women has been repealed.
