Tajikistan’s President Urges Conservation of Electricity and Water

President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan has appealed to citizens and businesses to conserve water and electricity, especially during the summer months, citing the challenging climate conditions and drought.

During a meeting with leaders and activists of the Sughd region, Rahmon emphasized the need for stringent measures to promote the efficient use of water and electricity across all sectors, from households to social institutions, farms, and production facilities, as quoted by the state agency Khovar.

Rahmon underscored the growing difficulty in ensuring food security due to unpredictable factors like climate change, drought, water scarcity, and rising food prices.

In September 2023, the state energy holding Barki Tojik cautioned about potential electricity shortages in the upcoming autumn and winter seasons, urging energy conservation measures. Subsequently, electricity supply restrictions were imposed in various parts of the country during the winter months.

Additionally, in April of the current year, Khovar agency highlighted a decline in water levels at the Nurek hydroelectric power station reservoir, attributed to insufficient winter precipitation, leading to electricity shortages.
