Strong earthquake shakes Azerbaijan, no casualties reported

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck Azerbaijan on Tuesday, July 4, at 23:01 Moscow time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 46 kilometers northeast of the city of Khachmaz, at a depth of 35 kilometers. There is no tsunami threat, Turanews.kz reports.

The earthquake was felt in several cities and towns in Azerbaijan, including Baku, the capital. The Republican Seismological Service Center of Azerbaijan reported that the epicenter of the tremors was located 80 kilometers northeast of the Khachmaz region. The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Azerbaijan stated that there was no damage in this area.

The EMSC said that the earthquake was felt in several other countries in the region, including Iran, Russia, and Georgia. There have been no reports of damage or injuries in any of these countries.

The earthquake occurred in an area that is seismically active. In 1999, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Azerbaijan, killing more than 2,000 people.

The EMSC said that the probability of aftershocks is high in the coming hours and days. The public is advised to stay away from buildings and structures that may be damaged.
