Russian Company to Build Second Nuclear Power Plant in Türkiye

Russian state corporation Rosatom is the leading contender to construct Türkiye's second nuclear power plant in the city of Sinop.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, A. Bayraktar, stated that Rosatom has already invested in Türkiye and gained experience from constructing the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, the country’s first nuclear power plant.

The proposed Sinop nuclear power plant is expected to be a joint venture between the public and private sectors, with its licensing process anticipated to take around 2-3 years.

In addition to negotiations with Rosatom, Turkish authorities are also discussing potential nuclear power projects with China for a plant in Thrace and with the United States for small modular reactors. The American Westinghouse Electric Company has expressed interest in building both small and conventional nuclear reactors in Türkiye.

The planned Sinop Nuclear Power Plant will have two power units, each with a capacity of 1250 MW.

Turkish Ministry of Energy is also reviewing proposals from South Korea and China, with a final decision expected by 2025. By 2050, Türkiye aims to have 12 reactors with a total generating capacity of 15,000 MW.
