Rogun Hydropower Plant to Boost Tajikistan’s Hydro Potential to 8% – Minister
Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Daler Juma, announced at the COP29 investment forum on energy transition that the completion of the Rogun Hydropower Plant (HPP) will increase the country’s hydroelectric power usage to 8% of its total energy potential.
While Tajikistan ranks among the top six countries globally for hydro potential, currently only 4% of this capacity is being utilized. The Rogun project, which includes both mixed financing and substantial government investment, aims to significantly expand this figure.
Minister Juma emphasized the need for foreign direct investment to fully tap into the country’s hydro potential. He expressed confidence that the development of hydropower resources would benefit not only Tajikistan but also contribute to the region’s commitments under the Paris Agreement, particularly in Central Asia and Azerbaijan.
The announcement comes during COP29, which began on November 11 in Baku, focusing on global climate action and energy transition discussions.
