Record Cold Hits Türkiye: Temperatures Plunge to -33°C
Eastern Anatolia is experiencing an intense cold wave as the New Year begins, with temperatures plummeting to record lows.
On the night of January 4, the temperature in Tekman, Erzurum province, dropped to an unprecedented -33.1°C, according to reports by AZERTAC. The Turkish General Directorate of Meteorology identified the village of Haciomer in Erzurum as “the coldest spot in the country over the past 24 hours.”
The freezing temperatures have caused rivers and lakes to freeze over, prompting authorities to advise residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Other regions in Eastern Anatolia also recorded extreme cold:
- Ardahan’s Gele district: -28.8°C
- Erzincan’s Çayırli district: -27.8°C
- Van’s Çaldıran district: -26.6°C
- Kars’ Sarıkamış: -22.1°C
The severe frosts are expected to persist in the region until January 8, according to meteorological forecasts.
