As per a draft presented by the Ministry of Labor, Social Security, and Migration of Kyrgyzstan, individuals considered relatives up to seven generations back will be barred from entering into matrimony. TuraNews.kz, citing Ulysmedia.kz, reports on this development.
According to the proposed changes, the following categories of citizens are ineligible to marry in Kyrgyzstan:
- Individuals already married to someone else
- Relatives within seven generations
- Adopters and their dependents
- Convicts serving sentences
- Individuals of the same gender
However, young adults not falling into these categories can wed freely if they are over 18 years old and give mutual consent. Before marriage, they are required to disclose their health status through a specialized medical examination. The findings of this examination are treated as confidential medical information.
It’s worth noting that while such customs are present in Kazakh tradition, they do not currently have legal backing in Kazakhstan.
