President Tokayev Meets Kazakh Sumo Wrestler Yersin Baltagul

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received professional sumo wrestler Yersin Baltagul, who has achieved significant success in Japan, the birthplace of sumo.

The Head of State congratulated the athlete on earning the prestigious “Maegashira” rank at the 2025 Emperor’s Cup, as well as receiving the “Kanto-sho” (Fighting Spirit Prize). Tokayev described the award as the result of perseverance and dedication.

The President emphasized that an increasing number of young Kazakhs are successfully representing the country abroad, noting that the state continues to prioritize support for talented individuals and the development of sports.

Recalling his visit to Japan, Tokayev remarked that Baltagul is widely respected there — “from the Emperor to ordinary citizens.” He stressed that the athlete’s achievements enhance Kazakhstan’s international standing and strengthen bilateral ties with Japan.

For his part, Baltagul thanked the President for the support and said he plans to meet with young athletes in Kazakhstan. He reaffirmed his commitment to proudly representing the national flag in Japan, a country of over 120 million people.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Tokayev awarded the wrestler the Order of Barys, II degree, in recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements.
