President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that alternative energy sources are being developed in his country and “According to our plans, 6.5 GW of renewable energy sources will be available in Kazakhstan by 2035” he said.

The world needs more green investments to save the planet, said Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at a Jan. 16 opening ceremony of the Abu Dhabi Sustainable Week (ADSW) Summit 2023, Turanews.kz reports citing the press service of Akorda.

President Tokayev stated that approximately 70 percent of the electricity in Kazakhstan is produced from coal and measures that will provide radical structural changes to the country’s industry and economy will be implemented in the coming years.

Noting that Kazakhstan is the first country in Central Asia to adopt a long-term strategy to achieve carbon neutrality, Tokayev said, “Our common goal is to close the gap between national and European emissions trading systems. All these measures will ensure that the Paris Agreement obligations are met by 2030.” the President Tokayev said.

Pointing out that the alternative energy resources sector is actively developing in his country, Tokayev said, “The abundance of wind and sun, as well as the vast territory, can make Kazakhstan a leader in this sector that can contribute to global climate protection efforts. In this context, we are improving the regulatory framework by creating the most attractive conditions for investors. According to our plans, by 2035, 6.5 GW of renewable energy sources will be available in Kazakhstan.” he said.

Tokayev stated that the other sector they attach importance to in this regard is “green” hydrogen, “International experts believe that our country can enter the top 10 in hydrogen exports.” he said.
