Part of rock collapses near medieval Shiomghvime Monastery in Georgia

A part of a rock collapsed near the medieval Shiomghvime monastery near Mtskheta, 30 kilometers from Tbilisi, on Monday. Eyewitnesses published footage of the collapse on social media, Turanews.kz reports.

According to local media, the landslide was caused by heavy rains.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Andria Jagmaidze, head of the Patriarchate’s press service, said that “small rocky collapses near the monastery occur every year.” He added that the monastery is safe and there is no threat to its structural integrity.

The Shio-Mgvime Monastery is a medieval monastic architectural complex near the city of Mtskheta. It is located in a narrow limestone gorge on the northern bank of the Mtkvari (Kura) River. The monastery was founded in the 6th century and is one of the most important religious sites in Georgia.
