Paris Olympics: Kyrgyzstan Secures Two Medals in Wrestling

Kyrgyzstan has achieved its first Olympic medals at the Paris Games with successes in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling.

On August 7, Greco-Roman wrestler Zholaman Sharshenbekov claimed bronze in the 60 kg weight category. Sharshenbekov overcame Iran’s Mehdi Mohsennejad with a score of 1:3 in the bronze medal match. He advanced to the semi-finals after victories over competitors from Kazakhstan and Romania but fell to Japan’s Kenichiro Fumita in a close contest.

In freestyle wrestling, Meerim Zhumanazarova competed in the 68 kg weight category and secured a silver medal. In the final, she faced Emit Elor from the USA and lost with a score of 0:3. Zhumanazarova’s path to the final included victories over Mongolia’s Delgerm Enkhsaikhan, Japan’s Nanoka Ozaki, and Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu.

Zhumanazarova’s silver medal is historic as she is the first Kyrgyz athlete to win two Olympic medals.

Looking ahead, Kyrgyzstan’s Akzhol Makhmudov (77 kg) and Uzur Dzhusupbekov (97 kg) will compete for bronze medals today against Colombia’s Alexis Munoz and American Joseph Patrick Rau. Additionally, boxer Munarbaek Seyitbek uulu will fight for a place in the final during the night of August 8-9. If he does not win, he will receive a bronze medal, bringing Kyrgyzstan’s total count to three.
