Over 250 earthquakes occurred in Uzbekistan since beginning of 2023
Since the beginning of 2023, more than 250 earthquakes with magnitudes from 2.8 to 6.8 have been registered in Uzbekistan and on the territories of neighboring countries bordering it.
This data of the Republican Center for Seismic Predictive Monitoring of the Ministry of Emergency Situations were announced at a briefing at the Information and Mass Communications Agency on March 26.
Frequent earthquakes are a natural phenomenon for Uzbekistan, since it is geographically located in the Mediterranean-Asian seismic belt, experts noted.
From 1900 to the present, more than 60 strong and destructive earthquakes have occurred on the territory of present-day Uzbekistan – with a magnitude of more than 5.
Over the past 10 years, the country has experienced six earthquakes with a magnitude of 6-8 points. As a result, 16 people died, 54 were injured, and the economic damage was estimated at 84 billion soums ($7,4 mln).
The largest number of victims – 13 – was during an earthquake of magnitude 6.5-7 on July 20, 2011 with an epicenter in Kyrgyzstan. Then, in some settlements of the Fergana region, separate old residential buildings were destroyed.
