Northern Cyprus Makes Historic Debut at UTC Summit in Shusha
President Ersin Tatar of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has traveled to Azerbaijan to attend the informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), marking the first participation of Northern Cyprus in an international organization under its constitutional name. The summit is scheduled to take place on July 5-6, 2024, in the city of Shusha.
President Tatar emphasized the historical significance of this milestone, stating, “This is the first time that the TRNC is participating in an international organization under its constitutional name.” He further highlighted the unity among Turkic states, expressing the TRNC’s priority to advance its observer status within the UTC.
The summit will convene member countries of the UTC, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, alongside observer countries such as Hungary and the TRNC. The theme of the summit is “Building a sustainable future through transport links and combating climate change.”
Prior to the main summit, the Council of Foreign Ministers of the UTG will convene to discuss key organizational matters. The summit is expected to culminate in the signing of the Karabakh Declaration by heads of state.
Northern Cyprus’ participation in the summit under its official name is viewed as a significant endorsement of the two-state policy in Cyprus, signaling a notable diplomatic stride in international forums.
