Nearly 2 Billion Cubic Meters of Water Directed to Kazakh Portion of Aral Sea in 2023
A total of 2 billion cubic meters of water has been delivered to the Kazakh section of the Aral Sea since the start of the year, as part of efforts to restore the region.
This announcement was made during a meeting of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) in Astana, attended by representatives from Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, which participated as an observer.
At the meeting, the IFAS Executive Committee’s Work Plan for Kazakhstan’s 2024-2026 chairmanship was approved. The plan includes executing instructions from the founding states’ leaders, enhancing the Fund’s organizational and legal framework, expanding international cooperation, and promoting awareness of environmental protection.
Two key projects under this plan are the Aral Sea Basin Action Program, which includes 35 regional initiatives, and the Regional Environmental Program for Sustainable Development in Central Asia. Additionally, the Fund aims to support the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination and the Interstate Commission for Sustainable Development, comprising Central Asian countries.
Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, emphasized the country’s commitment to Aral Sea preservation and ongoing collaboration with neighboring Central Asian nations to achieve further progress.
