Mudflows Cause Over 1.1 Billion Soms in Damage in Kyrgyzstan
In the past six months, Kyrgyzstan has experienced severe mudflows that have caused more than 1.1 billion soms in material damage. This information was shared by Azamat Mambetov, the First Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, during a recent press conference.
Since the beginning of the year up to July 24, the country has faced 311 mudflows, with the financial damage expected to rise due to recent events in Osh and Arstanbap. These disasters have resulted in the tragic loss of 22 lives, including 15 in the Osh region, 5 in the city of Osh, 1 in the Jalal-Abad region, and 1 in the Batken region.
One of the significant incidents occurred on June 28 in the Nookat region, where mudflows led to fatalities among both locals and tourists. Unfortunately, children from Kazakhstan were among those who lost their lives.
A particularly devastating mudflow struck the city of Osh on July 14, claiming 5 lives, including a mother and her three daughters from the same family.
Another major incident took place on July 23 in the village of Arstanbap in the Bazar-Korgon district of the Jalal-Abad region. The powerful mudflow swept away 23 cars, flooded a hospital and a shopping center, destroyed 5 bridges, and damaged 1 kilometer of an internal road.
These mudflows have had a significant impact on the country, highlighting the need for enhanced disaster preparedness and response measures.
