Türkiye, Spain, Franceand Israel have all offered to help Morocco in the wake of a powerful earthquake that killed more than 2,000 people, Turanews.kz reports.
The earthquake struck late on September 8th, with a magnitude of 6.8. The epicenter was located 70 kilometers south of Marrakech. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Morocco in over 120 years.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country is ready to support Morocco “by all means.” “Our country experienced a similar catastrophe just six months ago, and we are ready to help in any way possible,” he said.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez said that Madrid would send emergency and rescue personnel to Morocco, as well as other assistance. He said he received a request for help from Rabat early on Sunday morning.
France has also declared its readiness to help Morocco, but Paris is waiting for an official request from Rabat. “Our embassy in Morocco is in full readiness, the situation is being assessed. But at this stage, Morocco has not requested assistance,” said French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anne-Claire Legendre.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the state will provide “all possible assistance to Morocco, including, if necessary, a rescue mission.”
The earthquake has caused widespread damage in Morocco, with thousands of homes destroyed. The Moroccan government has declared three days of national mourning.
The international community has expressed its solidarity with Morocco in the wake of the earthquake. The United Nations has pledged $10 million in aid, and the European Union has offered to send experts to help with the relief effort.
