Mongolia Proposes International Coalition for Sustainable Pasture and Land Use, Says President Khurelsukh
President of Mongolia Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh announced a new initiative to establish an International Coalition for the Sustainable Use of Pastures and Lands of the Future during the World Leaders Summit at the 29th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku.
Addressing climate change as a rapidly accelerating issue due to both natural and human factors, President Khurelsukh emphasized its adverse impact on sustainable development, livelihoods, and global well-being. “It is crucial that we strengthen political leadership and joint action. Harmonious coexistence with Mother Nature is fundamental to human survival and must never be overlooked,” he stated.
The proposed coalition aims to counter the detrimental effects of climate change in countries that rely heavily on traditional livestock herding. President Khurelsukh expressed confidence that global support for this initiative will drive investments and funding across over 100 countries with pastoral practices, ultimately benefiting approximately 500 million people by improving their health and livelihoods.
