Uzbekistan’s president, Shavkat Mirziyoev, has been reelected to a third term in office with a landslide victory. According to the Central Election Commission, Mirziyoev won 87.05% of the vote in the early presidential election held on July 9, Turanews.kz reports.
The turnout was 69.85%, which is higher than the turnout in the previous presidential election in 2021.
Mirziyoev’s victory was widely expected. He has been popular among Uzbeks for his economic reforms and his efforts to improve relations with neighboring countries.
In a telephone conversation with Mirziyoev, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated him on his victory and expressed his hope for continued cooperation between the two countries.
Mirziyoev’s third term in office will begin on December 2, 2023. He will be 67 years old at the time of his inauguration.
