In Kyrgyzstan, the number of confirmed measles cases has soared to 4,484 individuals since the beginning of the year, TuraNews.kz reports citing information from 24.kg.
The majority of cases have been identified among unvaccinated children in organized groups.
The measles virus is actively spreading in key areas, including Bishkek, Jalal-Abad, and Chui regions, with transmission primarily occurring among unvaccinated children in organized settings. Outbreaks are also reported in various other areas across the country.
Efforts to curb the outbreak are underway, with a focus on catch-up immunization against measles and rubella. This initiative is integrated into routine immunization programs using the rubella-mumps-measles vaccine. Additionally, a supplementary immunization campaign is ongoing in Bishkek, Osh, and Chui regions, with 78 percent of 472,476 children having received the vaccine.
In response to the surge of measles cases in the Jalal-Abad region, authorities have commenced extra immunization activities targeting children in organized groups. Urgent vaccination of contact persons of all ages within a 72-hour timeframe is also being carried out.
Health experts emphasize the severity of measles, highlighting the potential complications associated with the disease. They urge parents to take necessary precautions by ensuring their children are vaccinated, underscoring the importance of protection against this preventable illness.
