Measles cases increase in Kyrgyzstan

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 2,316 cases of measles detected in Kyrgyzstan, according to the press center of the Ministry of Health. The most cases have been registered in Bishkek, Osh, Osh region, and Chui region, TuraNews.kz reports.

The main reason for the increase in measles cases is the decrease in the coverage of children and adults with routine immunization against measles and rubella.

In an effort to reduce the circulation of the measles virus, localize the outbreak, and prevent its further spread, the Ministry of Health is conducting an additional immunization campaign against measles and rubella. The campaign began on September 18 and will last until September 29 in the areas where the most active circulation of the virus occurs. The campaign is targeting children from nine months to seven years inclusive, regardless of vaccination status or previous measles and rubella disease.

As of September 26, the coverage of children for supplementary immunization against measles and rubella was 55 percent of the target group.

The Ministry of Health is urging parents to vaccinate their children against measles and rubella. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and death. The measles vaccine is safe and effective, and it is the best way to protect children from this preventable disease.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones from Measles

The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from measles is to get vaccinated. The measles vaccine is safe and effective, and it is recommended for all children 12 months of age and older. Adults who have not been vaccinated against measles should also get vaccinated.

In addition to vaccination, there are other things you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones from measles:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home from work or school and avoid contact with others.

If you think you or your child may have measles, contact your doctor immediately. Measles is a serious disease, but it is treatable if caught early.
