Mazhilis Reviews Bill on Special Status for Turkestan

Deputies of the Mazhilis of Kazakhstan are set to review the draft law on the special status of Turkestan city, along with a related bill.

These bills were developed to implement the directives given by the Head of State during a working visit to the Turkestan region on September 27, 2022.

“The draft laws aim to create an effective institutional environment for Turkestan’s development, manage public relations regarding its role as the spiritual and historical center of Kazakhstan, and preserve its historical and cultural heritage,” stated Nurtai Sabilyanov, chairman of the Mazhilis Committee on Economic Reform and Regional Development, during a plenary meeting. “Our committee is ready to prepare an opinion on these bills.”

The proposed legislation seeks to establish the legal and organizational framework necessary for Turkestan’s growth and preservation.
