Magnitude 5.3 earthquake hits Malatya, Türkiye, injuring 23

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 struck the eastern Turkish province of Malatya on Thursday, injuring at least 23 people, Turanews.kz reports.

The earthquake struck at around 9:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. GMT) and was centered near the town of Eshilyurt. The epicenter was at a depth of 7 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt in several other provinces in eastern Türkiye, including Adiyaman, Gaziantep, and Sanliurfa.

In Malatya, the earthquake caused some damage to buildings, but no major injuries or deaths were reported. However, 23 people were injured, mostly by falling objects.

The earthquake also caused power outages and water cuts in some parts of Malatya.

The Turkish government has sent emergency crews to Malatya to assess the damage and provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake.

The earthquake comes just a few months after two powerful earthquakes struck the southeast of Türkiye in February, killing more than 50,000 people.

The region is prone to earthquakes, as it lies along the boundary between two tectonic plates.
