According to the family announcement, Beckenbauer peacefully passed away in his sleep on January 7, surrounded by his loved ones, TuraNews.kz reports.
The German Football Association (DFB) has also confirmed the sad news of the football icon’s demise. Beckenbauer, affectionately known as “Kaiser” Franz in Germany, had left an indelible mark on the sport.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences, acknowledging Beckenbauer’s significant contributions to German football. “Beckenbauer was one of Germany’s greatest footballers and a ‘Kaiser’ to many,” Scholz conveyed on social media. “We will miss him.
