Legacy of the Great Steppe

On March 20, as part of the Nauryznama decade, the Day of National Sports is celebrated.

National sports are more than just competitions of strength, speed, and endurance. They are a vital part of our history, culture, and the spirit of the Great Steppe. Since ancient times, nomads have demonstrated not only physical power but also strategic thinking, skill, and perseverance.

Horses and bows are among the main symbols of nomadic life, and with them come traditional sports, such as:

  • Audaryspak – a horseback wrestling competition that requires agility, balance, and strength;
  • Baige – a test of speed and endurance for both horses and riders, demanding skill and determination;
  • Kazakh kures – traditional wrestling, where power, technique, and character are key;
  • Zhamby atu – mounted archery, requiring precision and focus;
  • Koi kotery – a strength challenge involving squats while holding a sheep, testing endurance and perseverance;
  • Togyzkumalak – a strategic board game that develops logical thinking and patience.

Today, Kazakhstan boasts 16,555 national sports clubs, 15 youth sports schools, and 17 sports clubs dedicated to preserving and developing traditional games.

National sports serve as a bridge between generations, honoring the past while confidently looking toward the future.
