According to the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic, the digital som is a digital version of the national currency and will function alongside cash and non-cash payment methods. Holders will be able to convert the currency between formats.
The testing will be conducted in several phases and will include the following:
- digital som issuance;
- transfers between digital wallets;
- state payments;
- offline payments without internet access.
Under current legislation, the digital som will become legal tender in Kyrgyzstan and is set to enter full circulation in January 2027.
Earlier in January, the country also began digitalizing personnel document management.
