Kyrgyzstan to Host International Gallops Horseback Expedition for the First Time

For the first time ever, the prestigious Gallops expedition — a cross-country horseback race inspired by the Paris–Dakar rally — will be held in Kyrgyzstan, starting July 27. Riders from across the globe will traverse the stunning high-altitude terrain surrounding Son-Kul Lake, a jewel of the Kyrgyz mountains.

The announcement was made by Erdenet Kasymov, Director of the Tourism Department under the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, who emphasized the country’s efforts to attract global tourism initiatives. “President Sadyr Japarov has declared a five-year plan for the development of mountainous regions, and the Gallops event is in line with that vision,” he stated. The race will begin and end in the village of Kyzart, Jumgal District, which has already positioned itself as an ethnotourism hub.

Gallops founder and organizer Badi Kebir explained the decision to bring the event to Kyrgyzstan: “This country offers unmatched natural beauty and rich cultural traditions. Participants are mostly affluent travelers, and their presence can positively impact the local economy — many return as repeat visitors.”

Gallops is a five-day endurance challenge, where 12 international teams and one local team will cover around 200 kilometers of mountainous terrain. Riders must demonstrate not only equestrian skill but also navigation and teamwork. Horses undergo strict veterinary checks after each 40 km stage — their pulse must stay below 70 bpm, ensuring the event prioritizes animal welfare.

According to local coordinator Azamat Jamankulov, the Gallops event has previously been held in countries like Oman, Morocco, Jordan, and India. Kyrgyzstan now joins this elite list. Riders will depart from Kyzart on July 19, circle Son-Kul Lake, and return to the starting point.

Evenings will be filled with cultural activities — traditional games, craft workshops, and introductions to Kyrgyz epic poetry and hunting traditions. Organizers stress that Gallops is more than a competition: it is a celebration of friendship, heritage, and harmony with nature.
