Kyrgyzstan to allow children to take mother’s surname
In Kyrgyzstan, the Constitutional Court decided on the issue of giving the mother’s surname to children, which caused a long debate in the country, Turanews.kz reports.
The court’s decision was made in response to a petition from a group of women’s rights activists who argued that the current law on surnames discriminated against women. The court agreed, finding that the law violated the principle of equality between men and women.
In the decision, children will be able to take their mother’s surname, but this will apply to children who have turned 16.
The Constitutional Court also emphasized that necessary legal arrangements should be made in connection with the decision. It was stated that the resolution of this issue is important in terms of complying with the principles of equality and preventing discrimination based on gender.
