Kyrgyzstan Proposes Tougher Penalties for Domestic Violence — 14 Days of Detention

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan are moving to toughen penalties for domestic violence. A new bill proposes increasing the maximum administrative detention for abusers to 14 days.

The draft law, approved in its first reading by the parliamentary committee on law and anti-corruption, includes amendments to the Administrative Code and the law “On the Protection and Prevention of Domestic Violence.”

The key measure is to lengthen the detention period to help reduce repeated offenses, allow victims more time to seek safety, and foster a zero-tolerance attitude in society toward domestic abuse.

The changes are aimed at creating a stronger legal framework to isolate offenders, protect victims more effectively, and raise public awareness about the seriousness of domestic violence.
