Kyrgyzstan may lift the ban on onion export

It is proposed to lift the ban on onion export in Kyrgyzstan. The issue on lifting the ban submitted for public discussion, Turanews.kz reports.

According to the public discussion of draft, the local farmers of the Kyrgyz Republic have stocks of 50,000 tons of onions at the moment and the monthly consumption of the country’s population is aorun 6,000 tons .

According to the policy of ensuring food security of the country, to lift the moratorium, Kyrgyzstan must have at least a ninety-day providing capability of onion.

In addition, a new onion harvest will begin in April of this year, and in the case of any overhaving stocks, it will cause to an overabundance of perishable products which will lead losses for local farmers. In this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture proposes to remove restrictions on the export of onions from the Kyrgyz Republic.

Earlier it was reported that Kyrgyzstan took restrictive measures to ensure the country’s food security and stabilize market prices for onions after receiving official confirmation from the State Antimonopoly Regulation Service of the Kyrgyz Republic about the overpriced price of onions, as well as the suspension of onion exports by Kazakhstan.

Recall that the ban was introduced from January 31, 2023 for a period of three months.
