Kyrgyzstan Introduces Fines for Spreading Fake News

The government of Kyrgyzstan has proposed amendments to the Code of Offenses to hold individuals and organizations accountable for spreading false information in the media and on social networks.

The draft law has been submitted to the Jogorku Kenesh for review.

Officials note that the internet and social media have become primary sources of information, but they are also used to spread fake news. The authorities emphasize that media regulation should not be seen as censorship or a restriction of democratic freedoms.

According to the document, individuals and organizations publishing fake news that disrupts public order or violates the rights of citizens, organizations, or the state may face fines: 20,000 soms for individuals and 65,000 soms for legal entities.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs is expected to oversee the enforcement of these regulations.
