Kyrgyzstan declares energy emergency

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov has signed a decree declaring a state of emergency in the country’s energy sector. The decree, which comes into effect on August 1, 2023, is due to a number of factors, including climate challenges, low water inflow in the Naryn River basin, and a lack of generating capacity, Turanews.kz reports.

The state of emergency will last until December 31, 2026. During this time, the government of Kyrgyzstan will take urgent measures to address the energy crisis. These measures include building new hydroelectric power plants, investing in energy efficiency, and implementing energy rationing.

The government hopes that these measures will help to ensure that the Kyrgyz people have access to affordable and reliable electricity.
