Kyrgyzstan Considers Ban on Criticism of Husbands and In-Laws by Divorced Women on Social Media

Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Japarov has instructed his deputy Edil Baysalov to monitor social media posts regarding divorced women in Kyrgyzstan.

Japarov emphasized the need to limit criticism directed towards husbands and their families, particularly from divorced women.

He expressed concern over divorced women denigrating their ex-husbands and in-laws on social platforms, citing it as contradictory to local traditions and customs.

“Instead of serving and being an exemplary wife in someone else’s home, they boast about their father’s position and get divorced, without showing respect for their mother-in-law and father-in-law. Then they speak out on social networks, which is unacceptable. They shouldn’t set an example. Our fathers taught that it is not appropriate for fathers-in-law to wear shorts, and similarly for mothers-in-law, they should not take off their headscarves,” said the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Drawing attention to the common occurrence of domestic violence, especially among women, recent statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs show troubling numbers: As of the end of 2023, there were 13,104 reported cases of domestic violence, with women making up 95 percent of the victims.
