Kyrgyzstan Builds 43.06 MW of Small Hydroelectric Power in Six Months

In the first half of 2024, Kyrgyzstan commissioned small hydroelectric power plants with a combined capacity of 43.06 MW.

This statement was made during a board meeting of energy companies and enterprises under the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan, which reviewed the energy sector’s progress over the period.

The meeting also noted that solar power plants with a total capacity of 430 kW are currently operational in the country. Additionally, the 1st hydroelectric unit of the Toktogul hydroelectric power plant and the 4th hydroelectric unit of the Uch-Korgon hydroelectric power plant have been earmarked for reconstruction, with modernization efforts underway. The Ministry of Energy is also actively preparing for the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 hydroelectric power plant, a significant project aimed at bolstering the country’s energy infrastructure.

During the meeting, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Bakyt Torobaev stressed the importance of preparing for the autumn-winter period to avoid repeating last year’s energy supply issues. He urged thorough checks of critical infrastructure, including the Bishkek and Osh Thermal Power Plants, substations, overhead power lines, and other energy equipment.

“The emergency situation from last year should not be repeated. Ensure that the Bishkek Thermal Power Plant, the Osh Thermal Power Plant, substations, overhead power lines, and all energy equipment are thoroughly checked and prepared for the upcoming autumn-winter period. This year, it is crucial to provide an uninterrupted supply of light and heat to the population,” Torobaev emphasized.
