Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to allow ID cards for border crossing

Citizens of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan will be able to use their ID cards for entry, exit, movement, and stay in both countries starting September 1, 2023. This was announced by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan.

The decision was made after amendments were made to the intergovernmental agreement on mutual trips of citizens. The amendments allow ID cards to be used as a travel document, along with other travel documents such as passports.

The move is expected to facilitate travel between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan and boost tourism and trade between the two countries. It is also seen as a step towards further cooperation between the two countries.

The amendments to the intergovernmental agreement were signed by the foreign ministers of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan on January 27, 2023. They were ratified by the parliaments of both countries in March 2023.

The use of ID cards for border crossing is a common practice in many countries. It is seen as a more convenient and secure way to travel. ID cards are also less expensive than passports.
