Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov offers cooperation to Mongolian copper mining plant
Kyrgyz President Sadir Caparov visited the Erdenet Copper Factory in Mongolia on Tuesday. The factory is one of the largest copper mines in the world and is a joint venture between Mongolia and the Soviet Union, Turanews.kz reports.
Caparov was briefed on the factory’s production and advanced technology. He also met with factory officials to discuss cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia in the mining sector.
In his speech, Caparov said that the mining industry is important to both Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia. He noted that Kyrgyzstan does not have the factories or technologies to extract copper, so it has to process its ores abroad.
Caparov said that he is interested in Mongolia’s experience in copper mining and that he wants to cooperate with Mongolia to share experience in the sector.
The Erdenet Copper Factory processes up to 40 million tons of ore annually, producing approximately 580,000 tons of copper concentrate and 6,000 tons of molybdenum concentrate. The factory was established in 1973 and continues to be one of the largest copper ore deposits in the world.
The visit by Caparov to the Erdenet Copper Factory is a sign of the growing cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia in the mining sector. The two countries have a number of joint mining projects, and they are looking for ways to expand their cooperation in the future.
