Kyrgyz Government protects fish stocks in Issyk-Kul and Son-Kul Lakes

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has signed a decree imposing a moratorium on commercial fishing on the Issyk-Kul and Son-Kul lakes. The moratorium, which will last for three years, was introduced to preserve and increase fish stocks in the two lakes, Turanews.kz reports.

The decree allows for exceptions to the moratorium, including for the organization and conduct of amateur and sport fishing, the carrying out of approved annual planned work on the artificial reproduction of fish stocks, and the carrying out of research activities and ichthyological monitoring of the state of fish stocks.

The Cabinet of Ministers has been instructed to take measures arising from the decree, including making appropriate changes to the current regulatory legal acts in the field of aquaculture.

The moratorium is a significant step in the government’s efforts to protect fish stocks in Kyrgyzstan. The Issyk-Kul and Son-Kul lakes are two of the most important fisheries in the country, and the moratorium is expected to help to ensure that these lakes remain a sustainable source of food for the people of Kyrgyzstan.

The decree has been welcomed by environmental groups, who have long been concerned about the decline of fish stocks in the two lakes. They say that the moratorium is a necessary step to protect the lakes and the fish that live there.

The fishing industry has expressed some concerns about the moratorium, but they have also said that they understand the need to protect fish stocks. They say that they will work with the government to ensure that the moratorium is implemented in a way that minimizes the impact on the fishing industry.
