“Khan Sultan” Opera to Premiere in Istanbul for the First Time

The grand opera "Khan Sultan," supported by TURKSOY, will make its debut on the Istanbul stage. This highly anticipated performance will be held at the Atatürk Cultural Center on December 15-16, 2024, and is set to captivate audiences with its impressive production, stunning costumes, and unforgettable historical tale.

The opera tells the epic story of Khan Sultan, a pivotal female figure in Turkic history, whose actions significantly shaped the fate of the Golden Horde. The work explores her intelligence, strength, and willpower, all of which influenced history. From the conquest of Khwarezm by Genghis Khan to the creation of the Golden Horde, the opera delves into a turbulent and transformative period of history.

This magnificent opera, brought to life by the talented artists of the Almaty Opera House, will leave the audience in awe with its emotional score and outstanding stage design. With characters such as Genghis Khan, Kuchi, and Berke, as well as strong female figures, the production offers an immersive journey into Turkic history.

The opera’s composer is Hamit Shangaliev, and the libretto was written by Maraltay Ibraev, a People’s Artist of Kazakhstan. The production is directed by the renowned Italian director Davide Livermore, who is a recipient of the “Order of the Italian Star.” He has previously worked with prestigious institutions such as La Scala, the Rome Opera House, and the Turin Theater. The scenic designer is Eleonora Peronetti, recognized in La Scala and French theaters, while the lighting design is by international director Gaetano LaMela. The talented ballet artist Assem Aldibekova serves as the choreographer, and costume design is by Ainur Erimbetova, with assistant designer Altin Serikbaeva.

Two operas, “Khan Sultan” and “Golden Horde,” will be staged, with a total of 173 costumes created for the performances.
