Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina reaches to Wimbledon Quarterfinals

Elena Rybakina, the first player of Kazakhstan and the 3rd player in the world, has reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon tournament, Turanews.kz reports.

In the fourth round, Rybakina faced Brazilian Beatrice Haddad Maia, who is ranked 13th in the world. Haddad Maia had previously beaten Rybakina twice, but this time Rybakina took the early lead and never looked back. She won the first set 6-3 and was leading 4-1 in the second set when Haddad Maia retired due to injury.

Rybakina will next face either Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur or Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinals. Jabeur is ranked 6th in the world and Kvitova is ranked 9th.

Rybakina’s victory is a major breakthrough for Kazakhstani tennis. She is the first Kazakh player to reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon since Yaroslava Shvedova in 2011.
